Weekly Haematology Deep Dive

The session will be Chaired by Prof Vernon Louw from the University of Cape Town and co-chaired by Dr Sharlene Parasnat from Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, UKZN.

Dr Sharlene Parasnath is currently the Head Clinical Unit of the Department of Clinical Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant Unit at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban, since 2015. She graduated with her MBChB from the Medical University of Southern Africa in 1999. She joined the Haematopathology training programme at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 2002, and on completion of her FCPath Haem (SA) in 2007, joined the IALCH Clinical Haematology unit as a fellow in Clinical Haematology. After obtaining her Certificate in Clinical Haematology she stayed on as a Clinical Haematologist in the Unit. She has a Higher Certificate in Health Services Management and is currently undertaking a Masters in Science, looking at the prevalence of acute leukemia in the province of KZN. She is a mother of four daughters and is known as the “bloody baker” in her unit.

Dr Honest Dewa obtained his MBChB from the University of Zimbabwe in 2006. He did Physician training at Pietersburg Hospital in Limpopo and qualified in 2017. In 2019, he joined Inkosi  Albert Luthuli Central Hospital as a Fellow in Clinical Haematology. He recently sat for the Clin Haem exit exams.

Dr Farah Rahman completed her undergraduate training at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2009. She qualified as a specialist physician in 2017, having trained at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and completed her MMed in 2018. Farah joined the Clinical Haematology team of “Bara” as a fellow in 2018 and obtained her certificate in Clinical Haematology under the tutelage of Prof Moosa Patel and Dr Vinitha Philip in 2020. She has joined the Clinical Haematology team at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH) as a consultant since January 2021.
