Statement Prepared by: Dr Candice Laverne Hendricks
The inaugural workshop of the Paediatric HSCT Working Party, a joint initiative by BLOODSA and the South African Association of Paediatric Haematology Oncology (SAAPHO), was held in Johannesburg over the weekend of 26–27 July — marking a pivotal moment for paediatric haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in South Africa.

The event brought together paediatric haematologists and oncologists from across South Africa, with representation from every paediatric HSCT unit. Key discussions focused on collaboratively standardising indications for HSCT in children and adolescents, improving data sharing to better understand the national HSCT need, and developing unified management protocols for various diseases.
Importantly, the group included representatives from both the public and private sectors, with all discussions aimed at unifying the national approach to this specialised treatment. There was unanimous agreement on the urgent need to improve access to essential drugs, particularly within the public sector. The discussions were marked by enthusiasm and inclusivity, resulting in a clear roadmap for the months ahead.
The event reflected a shared commitment among paediatric haematologists, oncologists, and transplant specialists to work together toward a common goal: expanding access to this life-saving treatment for more patients across South Africa.
