A major milestone for healthcare in Zimbabwe

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare has successfully performed the country’s first-ever bone marrow transplant.

A specialist haematology team led by Dr. Moses Chatambudza, Head of the hospitals’ Haematology Department, successfully performed an autologous stem cell transplant, an historic first for Zimbabwe.

This is a transformative procedure in the life of 55-year-old Clifford Munemo, who spent two years battling multiple myeloma. Previously, high costs had prevented him from traveling abroad for the care he so desperately needed.

Establishing this local stem cell transplant service in Harare means many more patients can now access life-saving treatments in Zimbabwe, lowering costs and improving accessibility.

Dr. Chatambudza is a valued BLOODSA board member – driving excellence in haematology across Africa – and we are thrilled to witness this major achievement in regional haematology care.  We warmly congratulate Dr Chatambudza and his entire team on this remarkable achievement and wish them continued success in expanding the program.
